On an outstanding journey of success and lessons learned over
the last 7 years, Commonland has a visionary mission and is looking for an
equally ambitious Director of Development & Communications to join them.
Born through the vision of ecologist, Willem Ferwerda, a sustainability leader and practitioner, and Wijnand Pon, one of the Netherlands’ leading entrepreneurs, Commonland was founded in 2013. Recognised and supported by a wide range of international expert organisations, Commonland currently comprises a global team of scientists, conservationists, farmers, facilitators, ambassadors and thinkers. Balancing where ecology and economy meet, we work together closely with an ever-growing group of partners as an initiator, catalyst and enabler of large-scale and long-term restorative landscape projects worldwide. Our mission is to transform degraded landscapes into thriving ecosystems and communities with local people, based on robust research and sound business cases, aligned with international policies and guidelines, and for the benefit of our planet and society.
We are doers, not dreamers. Together with our partners, including the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, we are committed to transforming 100 million hectares of degraded land through our unique and tested landscape restoration framework, by 2040. That’s an area twice the size of Spain – ambitious, but with the right partners and focus, we are confident that we can achieve this. To bring our vision and ambition into reality, we are seeking a new Director of Development & Communications who will develop a comprehensive development strategy and play a key role in driving and realising ambitious fundraising targets, including exploring newer areas of philanthropic and other funding support for our work.
The Director of Development & Communications will inspire and lead a growing team of fundraising, communications and advocacy professionals, and work very closely with the CEO to engage further and significant support for Commonland and our landscape and knowledge exchange initiatives. You will be confident in your ability to operate at this leadership level, and bring a proven track record in fundraising and achieving outstanding results in this area. Key to your success is your substantial experience of working with leading philanthropic institutions and individuals, ideally at a global level, to deliver highly successful income generating activities. Your inspiring, inclusive and collaborative leadership style will galvanise your team and help you gain the trust and confidence of those around you.
If you are able to work at both a strategic and tactical level, and would like to be part of an organisation which is making a transformational impact on the world we live in, we’d love to hear form you.
Our mission is to create an investable large-scale landscape restoration industry – aligned with international guidelines and policies – in close cooperation with experts and existing initiatives. Our approach is based on a sustainable business model, delivering the following 4 returns:
Inspiration; Social Capital; Natural Capital; and Financial Capital
